What are the Different Types of Carpet?

There are four main carpet pile styles that you can choose from including frieze, loop, cut, and textured.

Frieze carpeting is extra soft, with a casual style that comes from its unruly, longer fibers.

Loop carpeting works in casual and formal spaces alike, with a low profile that comes from its shorter, looped-ended fibers.

Cut Pile carpeting looks stunning in more formal settings, with its intricate patterns created are via a complex process of hooping and trimming its shorter fibers.

Textured carpeting is durable and appropriate for all types of settings, with its rougher, low-woven fibers.

Carpet Fibers

Carpet piles are made up of carpet fibers. Carpet fibers come from different materials that can either be natural or synthetic. Our selection includes nylon, triexta, polyester, and wool. Fibers play a role in the overall look, feel, and function of a carpet. If you have children and pets at home, you may want to consider a durable and stain-resistant fiber. If you suffer from allergies, then you should consider looking at more hypoallergenic fiber options.

Nylon is considered the strongest carpet fiber on the market thanks to its incredible wear resistance. The durability of your nylon carpet depends on the quality of the nylon, but higher-end products are exceptionally robust. Nylon carpets aren’t naturally stain-resistant, so they need to be treated for this purpose either during production or after they’re installed.

Polyester carpets are a more affordable alternative to nylon. Although they’re not as wear-resistant, polyester offers superior fade and stain resistance.

Olefin is a highly fade-resistant carpet fiber and will maintain its color even with sun exposure and other elements. It’s less durable than either polyester or nylon, making it a good option for low-traffic spaces.

Triexta is a cousin of polyester but performs more like nylon. It combines the strength and wear-resistance of nylon with the stain resistance of polyester.

Wool is a popular natural fiber. Its curly structure makes it resistant to matting over time. It’s also eco-friendly and considered hypoallergenic if properly cared for.

Stain-Resistant Carpet Options

Carpet is a stylish and inviting flooring option that looks beautiful in almost any room in your home. However, many homeowners worry their new carpet will be blemished over the years by inevitable spills and accidents. This is especially worrisome for pet owners and households with young children. When it comes to finding the best carpet for stains, you have many different choices. Many carpet manufacturers will use a stain treatment that either coats the fibers or are built into them. Built-in stain treatments won’t fade away over time. Some carpets, such as those with polyester, triexta, and wool fibers, have natural stain-fighting properties. For instance, polyester and triexta fibers repel water-based stains. This inherent feature may be complemented by a stain treatment that works for oil-based stains. Many modern stain-resistant treatments in carpets work so well that you can clean up spills with just water.

Carpet Installation

Carpet best performs in bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices. For active areas in your home like children’s playrooms or finished basements, we suggest checking out the Carpet One exclusive Oath by Resista® waterproof carpets. Carpet is the perfect type of flooring on cold mornings when you first wake up, and for after a long day on your feet.  We recommend not installing carpets in an area with a lot of moisture such as kitchens or entryways. Many of our stain-resistant carpet options are great for recreational rooms, children’s playrooms, and finished basements.
